Is the second floor of your home uncomfortably hot all summer long?

Have you invested in a new air conditioning system hoping to solve this issue? It is a common misconception that a hot second floor is the direct result of an undersized air conditioning unit or ductwork that has not been ran properly. In some cases that may be the issue, however, 90% of the time the solution to a hot second floor is much more simple then replacing your air conditioner. The reason your second floor is so hot during the summer is most likely an insulation issue. Having proper insulation is imperative to having a comfortable and energy efficient home.

Are you concerned that your home is under insulated? Are you familiar with the recommended insulation requirements for our area? Here in St. Louis Missouri we are in climate zone 4. The International Energy Conservation Codes (IECC) recommends that we have at least an R-38 in our ceilings/attics. If the insulation you have in your attic space is blown in cellulose you need to have 11.18” to have properly insulated home. If the insulation in your attic is blown in fiberglass you need to have 12.75” to be properly insulated. If you have less than the recommended thicknesses then a lack of insulation may be the root of your issue.

An under insulated home can lead to many issues. You may be experiencing extremely high utilities bills during the summer and winter months. You may also be experiencing uncomfortable living conditions that are so severe that you don’t utilize certain rooms in certain months.
